Which Trades Are Actually Dangerous?

Not the ones most people name. In the Bureau of Labor Statistics fatal injury data for 2024, roofers stand at 48.7 deaths per 100,000 full time equivalent workers, against 3.3 for all workers, while electricians sit at 5.3, which is lower than automotive service technicians, painters, HVAC mechanics, welders and plumbers. Height, heavy equipment and moving vehicles do most of the killing in construction, not electricity. The risk in these trades is real and concentrated: it is not spread evenly across the trades the way parents assume.

What does the fatality data actually say?

Parents worry about electricity. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts bodies, and its Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for 2024 does not rank the trades the way the worry does.

Rates below are deaths per 100,000 full time equivalent workers in 2024, with the actual number of deaths in the second column, all from BLS.

For scale outside the building trades, BLS puts logging workers at 110.4 and truck drivers at 25.7 in the same 2024 data.

Three things fall out of that table.

Roofing is the outlier and it is not close. At 48.7, roofers die at roughly fifteen times the all worker rate. Everything else on the construction list is in a different band. If you are going to be frightened of one thing on this page, be frightened of height.

Electricians are near the bottom of the trades, not the top. At 5.3, electricians are below automotive service technicians at 6.3, painters at 6.6, HVAC mechanics at 6.7, welders at 6.9 and plumbers at 6.9. The popular ranking of dangerous trades is mostly wrong, and it is wrong in a specific direction: it overrates the hazard people can picture and underrates falls, vehicles and heavy equipment.

Being the boss is not an exit from the risk. First line supervisors of construction trades sit at 12.8 with 105 deaths, higher than most of the trades they supervise. That is a fact worth holding on to before anyone tells you the danger ends once your kid is running the crew.

Also read the second column. Construction laborers have a mid table rate and the largest death count in the group, 334, because it is a huge occupation. A rate tells you individual risk. A count tells you how many families got the phone call.

Is electrical work safe, then?

No. It is safer than several trades people consider safer, which is a different sentence.

Electricians are still above the all worker rate of 3.3, and 53 electricians died on the job in 2024 by the BLS count. Electrical power line installers, a related but separate occupation, sit at 13.8. BLS says plainly on its own page that power line workers encounter serious hazards including high voltage electricity, often at great heights, and that occupation also happens to carry a BLS median wage of $92,560 for May 2024. Those two facts belong in the same paragraph every single time. The pay is partly the price of the risk.

What the data supports is a correction to the ranking, not a reassurance about the work.

What is the second surprise in this data?

That construction, as an industry, is not unusually likely to hurt somebody on an ordinary day.

BLS also runs a separate survey of nonfatal injuries and illnesses. The measure is total recordable cases per 100 full time workers, and here is 2024, from BLS Table 1.

Construction as a whole comes in at 2.2 against 2.3 for private industry generally. Electrical contracting is at 1.8, well below the private industry figure. Plumbing, heating and air conditioning contracting is meaningfully above at 3.0. Nationally, BLS reported 2.5 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in private industry in 2024, down 3.1 percent from 2023, at a rate of 2.3 cases per 100 full time equivalent workers.

These two tables are not comparable to each other. Different denominators, different units, one is by occupation and one is by industry. Do not put 2.2 and 48.7 side by side and conclude anything.

Read each against its own benchmark and the picture is this: construction is not unusually likely to injure a worker, it is unusually likely to kill one when things go wrong. Roofing contractors sit at a middling 2.4 recordable rate while roofers carry a 48.7 fatality rate. That single comparison is the most useful thing on this page.

What does that mean for what I am actually worried about?

Most parents are carrying two fears at once and they need separating.

The first is the everyday fear: cuts, strains, a fall off a ladder, a back that gives out at forty. On the injury frequency measure, the trades are roughly an ordinary workplace, and one of them is safer than average by that measure. The physical wear question is real and it is treated on its own in do the trades wreck your body.

The second is the catastrophic fear, and this is the one the data supports. Construction and extraction occupations accounted for 1,032 fatal injuries in 2024. Fatal falls, slips and trips among those workers fell 7.5 percent, to 370 in 2024 from 400 in 2023, which is progress and is still 370 people. Nationally there were 5,070 fatal work injuries in 2024, down 4.0 percent from 5,283 in 2023.

So the correct posture is not relief. It is aim. The catastrophic risk is concentrated in height, in vehicles and equipment, and in the occupations at the top of that first table. A parent who understands that asks better questions about a specific employer than a parent who is vaguely worried about wires.

What this looks like

Grady is an illustration, and he is 18, which is why the roofing offer is on the table at all. He is deciding between a roofing crew that will take him this summer and an electrical apprenticeship that starts in the autumn, and his father is trying to think about it honestly rather than anxiously.

The pay difference between the two offers is small. The risk difference is not. On the BLS 2024 figures the roofing occupation carries a fatal injury rate of 48.7 per 100,000 full time equivalent workers and the electrical trade carries 5.3. That is not a preference, it is roughly a ninefold difference in the thing his father is actually afraid of.

It does not settle the question by itself. Roofers work, get paid and go home, and 104 did not in 2024. If Grady takes the roofing job, the questions to ask the employer are about fall protection, training and supervision. Specific, immediate answers are a good sign. Vague ones are the answer.

Change one fact and it stops being a risk judgement and becomes a legal one. Were Grady 16 or 17 instead of 18, the roofing offer would be off the table before any of the above: federal child labor rules treat roofing work, and work on or about a roof, as a prohibited hazardous occupation at those ages. The only way through is the narrow exemption for registered apprentices and student learners, which carries strict written conditions and does not extend to a summer hire. The honest summary

The danger in the trades is real, it kills people every year, and it is not distributed the way almost anyone thinks. Roofing and ironwork and general construction labour carry the weight of it. Electrical work, the trade parents fear most, sits near the bottom of the trade rankings and still above the average job. Use that to ask sharper questions, not to relax.

Are electricians really safer than auto mechanics?

By the BLS fatal injury rate for 2024, yes: 5.3 deaths per 100,000 full time equivalent workers for electricians against 6.3 for automotive service technicians and mechanics. Both are above the all worker rate of 3.3. Safer than another trade is not the same as safe, and electricians still died at work in 2024, 53 of them by the BLS count.

What is the most dangerous construction trade?

Of the occupations BLS publishes rates for in 2024, roofers are the clear outlier at 48.7 deaths per 100,000 full time equivalent workers, roughly fifteen times the all worker rate. Structural iron and steel workers follow at 37.8 and construction helpers at 35.8. Falls are the dominant mechanism in that group.

Is construction more likely to injure you than an ordinary job?

Not by the recordable injury measure. BLS recorded 2.2 nonfatal recordable cases per 100 full time workers in construction in 2024 against 2.3 across all private industry, and electrical contractors were lower still at 1.8. Plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractors were higher at 3.0. The everyday injury rate is ordinary. The fatality risk is not.

Can I compare the injury rate to the fatality rate?

No, and it is worth being firm about this. They use different denominators and different units: fatalities are per 100,000 full time equivalent workers by occupation, recordable injuries are per 100 full time workers by industry. Never put 2.2 and 48.7 in the same column. Read each measure against its own benchmark.

What about my teenager specifically?

Federal child labor rules treat roofing work, and work on or about a roof, as a hazardous occupation for 16 and 17 year olds, with a narrow exemption for registered apprentices and student learners that applies only where the work is incidental to training, intermittent, short and directly supervised.
